Abstract

Even as the United States government waged a fierce and punitive War on Drugs, a catastrophic epidemic of opioid addiction ravaged the nation. This epidemic resulted from a systemic failure in US government regulation of the pharmaceutical industry, particularly by the US Food and Drug Administration. Under both Democratic and Republican administrations, a failed neoliberal approach to drug regulation oversight produced a national tragedy.
