Abstract The accidental discovery of spectral variations in Iota Herculis (B3 IV) is reported. The discovery was made during the course of extensive monitoring for nonradial pulsations in 1978 and 1979. The intermittent presence was noticed of six ultra-weak spectral absorption features in a 5 A region centered around the S II double-lambda 4128-4130 doublet. The time scale for the appearance and disappearance of these lines varies from a couple of hours to about 2 days. Careful inspection showed that few if any other intermittent features were present in the remaining interval of the 50 A spectra. An analysis of the observational data is conducted. It cannot be proven that temperature variations associated with certain nonradial oscillations are responsible for the variable behavior of P II, Ar II, and Cl II lines. Nonetheless, this interpretation is consistent with a number of observational facts.
