Abstract

The lymphocyte response of 94 patients with Hodgkin's disease has been studied using phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). Fifty-one patients were tested before treatment; 43 patients were tested after radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy; 15 patients were studied both before and after treatment; 28 patients were studied when in remission after treatment. The PHA response of the patients was significantly lower than that of the controls, P ⪡ 0·001. There was no significant difference between the PHA results when correlated with the clinical stage of the disease. There was a lower result in those patients with systemic symptoms compared with those without systemic symptoms. This result was significant, P = 0·05.
