Abstract

It is a well-known fact that the interpretation of many texts and passages is not only dependent on correct exegesis of the various linguistic elements of the text itself, but also on the perspective in which the text is seen. This chapter addresses literary perspective of Romans vii within its context. A text like Rom. vii is viewed in a different way by experts in the fields of philology, philosophy, Jewish law, Roman law, psychology, comparative religion, and dogmatic theology. The history of the interpretation of Rom. vii is an outstanding example of the fact that the interpretation and evaluation of linguistic data are influenced, to a noticeable degree, by the perspective and the point of view of the interpreter. The chapter contains double focus: that of the relation between a certain perspective and its relation to the interpretation of a certain passage, and the interpretation of that passage itself. Keywords: comparative religion; dogmatic theology; Jewish law; literary perspective; Romans vii
