Abstract

King Manasseh, who led Judah into sin, placed an image of Asherah, the Canaanite fertility goddess, in the temple of the Lord (2 Kgs 21:7). New research on a forgotten Greek travelogue argues that Canaanite religion in general - and the cult of Asherah in particular - lasted until well into the Christian era.
