Abstract
Gas permeation through investment materials is important in obtaining sound castings by centrifugal or gas-pressure techniques. The equations governing permeation are presented, followed by measurements of the permeability to air of casting investments, comparing different types of material, powder : liquid ratios, and bake-out temperatures. Transient gas flow as well as steady-state gas flow are considered, and in this context, porosities have also been compared. Measurements have been made of gas flow through moulds, and the relevance of such measurements is discussed in relation to the casting process.
