Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to stimulate consideration of the roles that teachers might play in promoting social justice both with and for school-age youth. It is proposed that adopting an ethical stance toward children requires efforts to identify and address oppressive social and political aspects of contemporary childhood; to understand and validate children's experiences, perceptions, concerns, and interests; and to value and sustain human diversity. Knowledge and experiences necessary to prepare prospective teachers to assume such responsibilities are outlined.
