Abstract
This essay discusses the wealth of performative traditions in Wales in contrast with the lack of a body of dramatic literature. The ‘trophy’ art mentality is an English construct and is inherently alien to Wales and its culture, and the clamour for national theatres in Wales is an attempt to impose a centralized vision on a nation of communities.
