Abstract

This paper presents a method of analysing the performance of linear induction machines with saturable steel secondary. This is achieved using the finite element method with an effective complex permeability function to account for saturation. In this way significant computational advantage is gained. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by comparing the calculated performance with the results of an approximate analysis ignoring end effects, and with a comprehensive set of test results in which, supply frequency, winding arrangement, and airgap length are all varied.
