Abstract

In this paper, we consider the Single-Carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) performance using rotated constellation in the presence of phase noise and channel estimation error. It was previously shown that using rotated constellation, the SC-FDMA system may attain the maximum frequency diversity and coding gain without a reduction in bandwidth-efficiency or a significant change in the peak-to-average power ratio. This approach is particular favorable in situations where the channel coding rate is high and OFDM exhibits inferior diversity performance compared with SC-FDMA. We show that rotated constellation is robust and its advantages over its non-rotated counterpart are retained in the presence of phase noise and channel estimation error. In particular, for high coding rate, the SC-FDMA system using rotated constellation may potentially outperform the coded OFDM system under the same impairments.
