Abstract

The optimum coefficient of performance (COP) of finite-time refrigerators operating with Rankine cycles for different refrigerants (R410A, R134a, R22 and R32) are investigated. The maximum COP is found to be dependent on the thermal reservoir temperatures and the mass flow weighted total heat conductance as well as the refrigerant properties. The optimal heat conductance ratio, which leads to the optimum COP, is found to be less than 0.5 and dependent on the mass flow weighted total conductance and hot reservoir temperatures for each refrigerant. The slightly asymmetric design of smaller thermal conductance for condenser and larger thermal conductance for evaporator is suggested for practical refrigerators. Besides, the curve slope of the saturated gas line of refrigerant is found to significantly impact on COP. The value of optimum COP decreases in sequence of R134a, R22, R410A and R32 in accordance with the orders of the curve slopes of these refrigerants. The performance of refrigerators can be improved by employing the refrigerant with larger steepness of saturated gas line.
