Abstract

This chapter presents new perceptual dialectology research from the Welsh–English border region, drawing data from 16- to 17-year-old respondents. It provides a review of the previous literature on perceptions of Welsh English dialect areas, before presenting new findings in relation to the most perceptually prominent Welsh English areas. As in previous perceptual research in Great Britain, proximity to dialect areas is demonstrated to be an important factor in perception. In addition, the important role of the Welsh–English border is examined, with findings demonstrating asymmetrical perceptions of areas amongst respondents on either side of the border. The chapter also discusses the characteristics and evaluations of dialect areas drawn by respondents, demonstrating the most- and least-liked areas amongst non-linguists in the Welsh–English border region.
