Abstract

Though the nature and characteristics of ecotourism in other parts of Australia and in other countries have been examined, little is known about ecotourism in Western Australia. This paper represents a first step and reports on the results of a survey of Western Australian ecotourism tour operators. The paper is simple, descriptive-level case study and its value lies in the relatively scant knowledge base. Data were obtained using questionnaires administered by either face-to-face surveyor by mail to nineteen of Western Australia's thirty ecotourism operators during 1992The results indicate that there is no universal definition of ecotourism shared by the operators but rather a range of elements focused on the enjoyment and appreciation of the natural environment.
