Abstract

The role of pattern perception theory baaed on the Gestalt view of perception is discussed in relation to the practical design of symbols for machine displays. Experimental studies of discrimination and apprehension of meaning of symbols are reviewed, and some recommended perceptual principles important to symbol design are summarized
