Abstract
This study which is translated from the original Portuguese is concerned with migration from the Cape Verde islands. Separate consideration is given to voluntary migration and to forced labor migration. The history of the islands and the development of their population from the fifteenth century to the present day are first described. The next chapter is devoted to voluntary emigration with particular emphasis on emigration to the United States and Guinea. A chapter on forced emigration to other African areas ruled by the Portuguese is then provided. Statistical data on this migration are included in appendixes.
