Abstract This essay deals with the archaeological and extrabiblical clues that are relevant for identifying the historical realities that may lay behind pentateuchal texts. It will concentrate on the most thoroughly discussed pentateuchal narrative complexes, namely, the patriarchs and the Exodus and desert wandering.
