Abstract

After the beautiful contribution by Claude Itzvkson to this volume, I’m a little embarrassed to add my own comments on the matrix model of Penner. Nevertheless. I am going to try to convince you that Penner’s matrix model can in fact he interpreted as D = 1 string theory [1] (perhaps in a topological phase). Even if I fail in convincing you of this. I hope that you will agree that the Penner model is a useful laboratory for exploring some of the issues that arise in D = 1 string theory (such as the origin of the logarithmic scaling violation at low genus [1][2]) in a much simpler context.
