The “Pauk Phaw” narrative and China’s relations with Myanmar since the 1950s

  • Since the end of the Second World War, states have often promoted political discourses focusing on inter-state cooperation

  • Taking into consideration the enduring popularity of the term in China’s state narrative, especially at the present, and the various historical contexts of China-Myanmar relations in which the phrase is used, we suggest that a critical study of the narrative as used by China contributes to furthering the understanding of China’s policies orientation in China-Myanmar relations

  • In our analysis of the four periods of China’s Pauk Phaw narrative in the People’s Daily, we observe that the narrative has formed an essential instrument of China’s policy and strategy in regulating China-Myanmar relations

Introduction

Since the end of the Second World War, states have often promoted political discourses focusing on inter-state cooperation. The ups and downs of China and Myanmar relations in this period clearly show how the transition in China’s conception of its state identities and interests shaped different themes and the relevant content of the Pauk Phaw narrative.
