Abstract
With two BNP MEP's elected in June and a Cameron victory in 2010 likely to accelerate the pressures in Scotland and Wales towards separation Mark Perryman examines the potential for a progressive English patriotism. Citing the work of Chantal Mouffe, Eric Hobsbawm and Stuart Hall he examines the appeal of a right-wing populism in England, the racialisation of nationalism that the BNP represents and how a version of the SNP and Plaid Cymru models of civic nationalism could be developed in England. Mark concludesthat a left which actively disavows the progressive potential of patriotism will be incapable of shaping a democratic and inclusive English settlement.
