Abstract

The U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). It is important to think about how this act will affect mental health services for older adults. The act has the potential to improve health outcomes across all income and age groups. There are specific provisions that are expected to improve care for individuals with mental illness, but there is little information about how these provisions will affect older adults with mental illness. As we move toward implementation of the PPACA, psychiatric nurses need to be aware of myths surrounding the act and to think about changes in the health care system, such as collaborative models of care, that may help identify and overcome barriers to treatment of older adults with mental illness.
