Abstract

Recent research has shown that chronic spinal disabling occupational disorders (CDOSDs) develop due primarily to psychosocial factors, rather than purely physical ones. A biopsychosocial approach, rather than a biomedical viewpoint, has been suggested as being more effective in managing early and late chronic spinal pain. Assessment of psychiatric comorbidity is one important component in this process. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) has been developed as a validated self-report measure. It is a simplified version of the clinician-administered Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID), developedto reduce both the time and cost of administering the SCID. Many previous studies have suggested that the PHQ may be adequate for diagnosing major psychopathologyin a primary care setting, but little is known about its diagnostic accuracy within a CDOSD, which usually has high psychiatric comorbidity.
