Abstract

The author of this book, Edmund Kerpel-Fronius, MD, is one of the leading figures of European pediatrics. He was born in 1906, and since 1946 he served as a professor of pediatrics in Pecs, Hungary, and later in Budapest. In this latest effort, he reviews his life experiences on his studies in pathophysiology in infantile malnutrition. This book, containing about 300 pages, is divided into several chapters. The first two chapters discuss the assessment of malnutrition and the relation between malnutrition and diarrhea. Further chapters deal with the effect of malnutrition on basal metabolic rate and the effect on other functional systems (thermoregulation, hemodynamics and circulation, renal function and respiration). Other chapters are devoted to the metabolism of water and minerals (water content and distribution, hyponatremia, potassium depletion, magnesium depletion, and edema problems).
