Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the history, stylistic development and ideological features of medical photography in China during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Based upon photographs found in personal and institutional collections, and published in medical journals and books, the author charts changing representations of China and the Chinese.
