Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss gene manipulation by man in relation to disease (pathogen) and insect resistance in plants. Both disease and insect resistances are broad, complicated research areas and whole books have been devoted to each. Therefore, I can only present an overview and point out some salient features in this paper. My objective is to make it most useful to those not actively engaged in plant breeding. Furthermore, I have included only a limited number of references, mainly to serve as examples. My recent book chapter (Hooker, 1983) and other general works can be consulted for details and citations to additional research papers (Painter, 1951, 1958; Beck, 1965; Van der Plank, 1968, 1975; Pathak, 1970, 1972; Hooker, 1972a, 1984; Johnson, 1972; Maxwell et al., 1972; National Academy of Sciences, 1972; Sprague and Dahms, 1972; Nelson, 1973; Day, 1974; Gallun et al., 1975; Kennedy, 1978; Russell, 1978; Harris, 1979; Parlevliet, 1979; Maxwell and Jennings, 1980; Robinson, 1980a; Jenkins, 1981).KeywordsPowdery MildewSpecific ResistanceInsect ResistancePrivate IndustryPlant Breeding ProgramThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
