Abstract

Objectives: Different pathological aspects of the aortic valve insufficiency have been revisited in order to obtain explanatory correlations. Materials and Methods: Fifteen aortic valves, surgically removed for an acquired regurgitation, have been submitted to histochemistry for elastic fibers (Weigert's stain, Van Gieson's stain, Verhoeff's stain) and mu - cins (Alcian/blue PAS stain). Results: Elastolysis, likely correlated with aging, can be considered a starting event, followed by mucoid degeneration, with a scanty remodelling attempt and a limited presence of newly formed muscle-like cells. Conclusions: The extracellular matrix degeneration, secondary to a proteolytic degradation, is supported by an enzymatic activity, related to a genetic or metabolic basic disorder.
