Abstract

An introductory review of the main hormonal patterns associated with endometrial carcinoma is presented in order to correlate it with the microscopic patterns of the ovaries of such patients as compared with others who have the Stein-Leventhal Syndrome or who are in the postmenopausal period. It is postulated that the ovary of a patient who will develop an endometrial carcinoma is particularly susceptible to the high gonadotropin titers of the postmenopause with a consequent stimulation of the stromal compartment of the gonad. This will give rise to a chronic secretion of proestrogens that will cause obesity and endometrial hyperstimulation. Several possibilities of interfering with the mechanisms which might prevent endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma are discussed.
