Abstract

Current medical and psychological approaches to the treatment of pain are reviewed to see how clergy can provide more effective spiritual support and guidance to people who suffer pain. Physical pain from any cause is a highly complex experience which may be helpfully distinguished into three types: acute, chronic, and terminal-each requiring a slightly different approach. Clergy can provide a listening ear and a caring presence, paying attention to the sufferer as a whole person. Various religious understandings of suffering and evil are reviewed so that clergy may better assist those who struggle with the meaning of their pain.
