Abstract

THE LANGUAGE LABORATORY in its short history has been simultaneously praised, cursed, ignored, abused, found wanting, and found to be beneficial. In its early days as it was being hailed by self-proclaimed experts, the implications of its purpose were at first misunderstood and, consequently, feared by many language teachers. There followed, then, with our National Defense Education Act Institutes a long period of some enlightenment, but often too little, and thus many labs were and are still being misused.
