Abstract
Chapter 6 discusses the past, present, and future of Boys Love (BL) cultures in East Asia. It raises a question of how this particular subculture (i.e., BL fandom in East Asia) could obtain strong fan bases across national and linguistic boundaries and beyond political, cultural, and historical conflicts. She firstly historicizes BL culture and its development in each East Asian country, with a focus on reciprocal actions. Then she explores the root of shared fantasies about the male body that are described in BL content among BL participants and offers culturally specific backgrounds regarding BL’s origin, such as Confucianism and the oppressive education system. Next, she moves on to examining recent, noticeable BL phenomena that are commonly discovered in East Asian popular cultures.
