Abstract

The flood that occurred on the Odra river in July and August 1997 was one of the biggest for this river noted in history. The flood was less violent on the lower Odra than on the upper and middle stretches of the river. In this area, however the flood also imposed severe damages, especially on embankments, the river bed and hydrotechnical structures. Moreover, the water transported a large amount of potentially dangerous substances from the flooded areas and this load was eventually released in other flooded areas. To evaluate the forces that lead to damage and to prevent similar disasters in the future, a documentation of the discharges along different branches of the river is necessary.
