Abstract

Thirty 7-year old and 26 10-year old boys from a primary school were presented with temporal sequences of meaningful and meaningless figures. Sequences of meaningful figures were better perceived and retained by above-average readers than by below-average readers, especially in the younger group. The two reading groups did not differ significantly in their memory for sequences of meaningless figures. By means of the mediation test of Kendler, Kendler and Learnard a division was made between mediators and non-mediators. Mediators perceived and retained sequences of meaningful figures better than non-mediators. The 2 groups did not differ significantly on the temporal sequences of meaningless figures. There were about the same number of mediators and non-mediators in the 2 reading groups.
