Abstract

The ParaWalker was designed at the Orthotic Research and Locomotor Assessment Unit (ORLAU) for children with spina bifida. Using crutches, these children walk with a reciprocal gait. Experience with the children and improvements in the design has enabled the team at ORLAU to give adult thoracic level paraplegics the chance of low energy reciprocal walking. The orthosis is described together with the fitting and training programmes. Energy costs are discussed, with comparisons to previous surveys. The hybrid system, i.e., ParaWalker plus functional electrical stimulation (FES), is also considered.
