Abstract

The stability and motions of a two-pendulum system and aten-pendulum system under parametric excitation are calculated. Theequations of motion are derived in symbolic form via the multibodymodelling language, AutoSimTM. FORTRAN code written byAutoSim is then utilised to yield the matrices necessary for stabilityanalysis by Floquet theory. The matrices are transferred to MATLAB foreigenvalue determination. FORTRAN simulations are used to illustratestable and unstable states of the systems according to the excitationlevel used. Time histories are plotted using the freely availableplotter WinEP. The analyses reinforce and complement the contents of theprevious paper of Kane and Levinson [1]. They demonstrate the power andease of use of state-of-the-art symbolic codes for mechanical systemsanalysis. They also show how a model builder can combine with othercommon software modules to yield an effective total system.
