Abstract

Strictly speaking, electrically uncharged and electrically charged gas mixtures can approach the Maxwell's specter in the context of low-ionized mono-atomic mixtures within a weak electric field. The parameters of the Maxwell spectrum pertaining to the gas of free electrons directly determine the insulating characteristics typical of the examined gas mixture at the fundamental level. A condition for breakdown was carried out as a result of the ionization coefficients derived in that manner, accompanied by conditions for the breakdown according to the Townsend mechanism. In the experimental part of the paper, the value of the breakdown voltage dc of noble gases mixture (of He and Ne) was measured. The parameters of the experiment included the percentage of gas mixture, its pressure and inter-electrode distance. Results obtained in the paper are useful for optimizing the characteristics of gas-filled surge arresters at low-voltage level.
