Abstract

The Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany are building the highway connection between Prague and Dresden. The Czech section is the 92 kilometres long D8 highway. It has to pass the mountain mass of Ceske Stredohori and Krusne Hory close to the German border. After complex preparation and optimisation of the solution, the alignment comprising four tunnels has been chosen. The longest one is the Panenska Tunnel having been under construction since September 2003. Twin parallel tubes 2000 meters long are being mined downward from the northern portal. The tubes are driven through a faulted massif comprising mostly orthogneiss with local occurrence of vein blocks of granite porphyry. The excavated cross-section has the area of 75,5 square meters (in emergency laybys121 square meters) and is divided horizontally to the top heading, bench and invert. The work on the secondary lining will commence at a distance of 1000 meters behind the face.
