Abstract

The palynostratigraphy and palynofacies of two boreholes from Ewenny and Cwrt-yr-ala in South Wales are discussed. The Welsh succession consists of the fluvial Quartz Conglomerate Group passing upwards into marine shelf lithofacies; the Lower Limestone Shale Group and Barry Harbour Limestone. The palynomorph assemblages are well-preserved, diverse and include miospores and acritarchs; scolecodonts are also present. The Quartz Conglomerate Group is assigned to the Strunian (uppermost Devonian), LN Miospore Biozone and the overlying Lower Limestone Shale Group is assigned to the Courceyan (Lower Carboniferous), VI-PC Biozones. The Devonian-Carboniferous boundary is placed within the uppermost part of the Quartz Conglomerate Group or the base of the Lower Limestone Shale Group. The sequence is dated using current Carboniferous miospore zonal schemes.
