Abstract

This paper examined five sets of paired comparison judgments in order to identify the most probable source of intransitivity in the data. An attempt was made to separate the influences of multidimensional judgment criteria, indiscriminable objects, and unreliability. Results call into question the usefulness of the paired comparisons as a method for assessing the dimensionality of judgment criteria, but reinforce its use in providing information about sensitivity to stimulus differences.
