Abstract

Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of the plasmocytes that infiltrate the bone marrow, causing distant manifestations such as kidney failure and hypercalcemia. It presents mainly as anemia or bone pain with pathologic fractures. Myeloma can be managed with corticosteroids, thalidomide or chemotherapy, but the prognosis is, even with treatment, not so good. Back pain is one of the most frequent complains that brings patients to the hospital. It generally presents as musculoskeletal cause that can be easily managed with antinflamatory drugs, but sometimes lumbar pain is a warning sign of more serious pathology.
