Abstract

The partnership of sound design, a competent builder, effective construction inspection, and proper operation and maintenance is necessary to have a successful mobile offshore drilling unit. Current experience indicates the relative importance of construction inspection in reducing the need for in-service structural inspections. Not only are the results of construction inspection easier to detect and repair, but they are also cost-effective. Cooperation between the designer, builder, owner, regulatory body and classification society is necessary to achieve this proper balance between construction and in-service inspection.
