Abstract
RAJU, M. R., AMER, N. M., GNANAPURANI, M., AND RICHMAN, C. The Oxygen Effect of tr- Mesons in Vicia faba. Radiation Res. 41, 135-144 (1970). The measurement of the oxygen enhancement ratio for 7- mesons is reported. The effect measured was the reduction in the rate of growth of Vicia faba roots. The OER values were found to be 1.35 and 1.5 for roots exposed at room temperature and at 40C, respectively. Since the experiments described were performed with a dose rate of 30 rads/hr, the value of OER at low temperature is of particular interest. Such a value is relatively independent of dose rate; hence, it may be applicable to more intense beams. It should also be noted that the OER at room temperature is approximately 2 for conventional radiation (e.g., 60Co gamma rays) at a dose rate of 30 rads/hr.
