Abstract
The cyclic dipeptide cyclo-[( S)-His-( S)-Phe] is found to catalyse the oxidation of benzaldehyde to benzoic acid. A mechanism is proposed both for this reaction, and for the asymmetric addition of HCN to aldehydes catalysed by this peptide based on a common intermediate for bothreactions.
