Abstract

This chapter describes the main features of the educational evaluation process in France: very active, outwards oriented, focusing on schools. It argues that reasons for these characteristics and for their probable duration are to be sought in the history of these last 30 years, at the articulation of three subsystems: Education system, state methods of government and state systems of legitimacy.
