Abstract
The skills that are taught to the software architect in academic programs often leave him or her completely unprepared to assume the role of solution architect on a project with more than four or five developers. Furthermore, the globalization of software development has created a need for architects that can effectively manage multiple teams at multiple locations. Additionally, the lack of qualified architects has resulted in serious difficulties for industry. This position paper provides insight into the 'real' role of the architect on a large project, and examines the gap between what is taught at the university and what skills are needed for success.
