Abstract

This paper explores the other mommy, a frequent solution to the professional woman's dilemma in balancing childcare and work commitments. Fourteen professionally employed mothers and 18 childcare workers were interviewed for this study. Results indicated that private childcare arrangements solve many logistical problems for the professional woman. These arrangements change the basic family structure without changing the traditional mothering role. Expected to be more than an employee but less than a family member, both the worker and mother must clarify a unique relationship for which there is no precedence.
