Abstract

OTHELLO REMAINS A TEXTUAL MYSTERY, and a large part of the problem is that a commonly accepted hypothesis stands on questionable grounds. The hypothesis concerns the 1622 quarto (hereafter Q1), which differs from the 1623 Folio text (F) on thousands of points, some adding up to major variations, many adding up to nothing beyond their own punctiliousness. Eventually the tiny marks of difference may become the crucial material for solving the overall puzzle, but for the moment I am concerned with the major differences and with the prevailing account of Q1 which seeks to explain them.
