Abstract

This paper will argue that in depictions such as the Netflix series, Unorthodox, the Jewish Mother appears as a result of the unique form of anti-Semitism that is targeted towards Ultra-Orthodox Jews as they are often stereotyped as the antithesis to liberal values. This shall be done in three-fold; first, it will be demonstrated how the depiction of women in the Hasidic community in Unorthodox fulfils the historic stereotypical representation of the Jewish Mother. Second, it will be elaborated upon how this image has been created through the lens of the contemporary dominant culture, that is liberalism. Third, an analysis using literature on stereotypes will seek to divulge the implications of such portrayals.
