Abstract
Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) is often observed in patients with periodontitis, especially in the anterior region. Orthodontic treatment allows correction of PTM and aims at preservation of natural teeth and establishment of normal occlusion, but periodontal patients are at risk for further progression of periodontitis. The most important criteria for success is elimination of the active periodontal inflammation before and during orthodontic tooth movement. Therefore, close collaboration between the orthodontist and the periodontist is mandatory. General knowledge of the etiology and manifestation of periodontitis and satisfactory patient׳s cooperation is essential during the orthodontic treatment in affected patients. Careful diagnosis, appliance construction, and permanent retention is critical for a successful prognosis.
