Abstract

Chapter 6, a new chapter included in the second edition, explores the vibrant field of research into the origins of prosocial behavior and morality in infancy and early childhood. This research extends and complements theories discussed in Chapter 5, including the evolutionary, neurobiological, and intuitivist perspectives on moral development. After providing examples of widely cited research on early morality and fairness, Chapter 6 turns to recent research on early prosocial behavior (empathy, helping, sharing, and cooperation), including how to promote prosocial behavior and the benefits of prosocial behavior.
