Abstract
Early in World War I, the writer had the pleasure of serving on the staff of Admiral Marbury Johnston, Commander of Squadron 2, Cruiser Force, Atlantic Fleet. Later in that war he served as navigator in the Naval Overseas Transportation Service. While navigator in the Naval Transport Aeolus, under the command of Captain H. G. S. Wallace, U.S.N., he was fortunat- in getting the idea which eventually resulted, upon assignment to shore duty after the war, in the conception and in the development of the original Star Finder and Identifier.
