Abstract

Using the United States Air Force Academy Group Reaction Course as a leadership-assessment center, global ratings of leadership potential were determined for 545 entering cadets, using a five-point scale. The Group Reaction Course consists of 12 problem environments similar to those used in World War II by the Office of Strategic Services for assessment. These assessments then were used to predict independent ratings of leadership by peers, upper-classmen, and tactical officers in the cadets' respective squadrons, and an averaged composite of the three independent ratings at the end of the cadets' fourth-class (freshman) year. The predictive validity of the assessments was statistically significant for all four sets of criterion ratings; Pearson product-moment correlations ranged from –.26 to –.34. Potential applications of similar assessments in selection and training are discussed.
